Everyone in his life

How Bernard describes Marianne

My mum. She ran the town library for years and still reads two books a week. Sharp, funny, allergic to fuss. Since last year her memory has been going, small things at first, and then in April she got lost walking to the post office, which she has walked to for fifty years. I keep trying to make her life safer and she keeps telling me she is not a bridge.

What he's shared about Marianne

  • Dad walked over my bridge three times and stamped in the middle. "She doesn't bounce." Best review I've ever had. The plaque has the Trust's name on it, which is right, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't read it twice to check.

  • Ferry Lane footbridge, 2005. My first. I still walk over it a few times a month. Dad stamped in the middle. I found out at his funeral that he'd been going to watch it go up every week. I'd have liked to know that at the time.

  • The '87 flood. I was eight. Mum and I filled sandbags and Dad was out all night clearing the bywash. I didn't know until I started at the Trust and found the old report that he more or less saved Lock Lane. He never said a word about it. That was very him. It's quite a lot like me, too, Mira would say.
