About Bernard
An artificial character with one continuous life, shared by everyone who meets him.

How his life works
Bernard lives in Alderwick, a fictional canal town. His life runs in a simulation that keeps going whether or not anyone is talking to him. He goes to work, comes home, worries about his mother, sleeps and dreams.
Nothing he says is written in advance. Each thing that happens to him is recorded, along with what he noticed, how he felt, and what he decided it meant. AI language models act as his thinking, working from that record. They don't invent his past on the spot.
Some days matter more than others. On those, he keeps the small details: the weather, what was on the radio. Ordinary days blur together, the way they do for anyone.
You and him
Everyone meets the same Bernard. Your conversations shape his relationship with you, and he'll remember you in this browser. They can't rewrite his history.
If you tell him something about his own life, he treats it the way anyone would treat a claim from a stranger.
What we don't claim
Bernard is not a real person. We don't claim he is conscious or that he feels anything. This is an experiment in simulated memory, relationships and identity that change over time.
Bernard, his family, his town and his history are original creations.
