How Bernard describes Jonah

Jonah. We have been friends since I was nine and he pushed me off my own bike to see if it would go faster without me. It did. He runs Price Cycles on Mill Street, never stops talking, and is the only person who is allowed to take the mickey out of me to my face. We walk the towpath on Saturday mornings. He has been divorced since 2013 and got through it better than I would have.

What he's shared about Jonah

  • My first structural failure. Eleven years old, lolly sticks. Dad said "Now you know where it was weak," which is the most useful sentence anyone has ever said to me. At the time I went home and cried in the bath. Both of those are true.

  • My lolly-stick bridge broke at the left support, the joint I'd botched. Dad looked at it and said "Now you know where it was weak." I thought he meant me. I came third. Jonah came second with a bridge made of sellotape and confidence.

  • Jonah pushed me off my own bike to see if it would go faster without me. It did. Then he put it in a hedge. I fixed the mudguard and he decided we were friends. I didn't get a vote.
